Friday 31 December, 2010

Last day of the year!

Anyways, yesterday was such a drag! Blue Mountain was crowded and to make matters worse, the snow was soft, sticky, and not ideal for snowboarding...In addition, someone fell of the lift (I was on it at the time), and fifteen minutes went by before the lift began to move again...We were going to go on New Year's Day, but the temperature is supposed to be +12 in T.O. so my parents decided against going (yes!).

Today, I woke up at 11am (again) and was dragged into going to the Ontario Science Centre by my parents because my little brother's friend could not go and he felt very lonely.

So right now, as I am typing all this up, I have accomplished nothing today (once again) and it's already 6 o'clock. After dinner, I plan on playing another hour of piano, work on my Snake Game for another hour, and use the remaining hour to finish my drawing homework...

Wish me luck...

Thursday 30 December, 2010

Almost 2011...

Today, I found my SPECIAL AND ALL-POWERFUL ERASER!!! Now I can start and finish my drawing homewor!!!

Anyways...

I'm leaving home in 2 hours and not coming back until 12 at night so I'm posting right now before I forget.

I just spent 2 minutes (literally) and I fixed a problem in my Snake Game. In the for loop, I changed the range from 1 .. tailLength to 2..tailLength which eliminates array subscript out of bounds errors. Now, every time the snake eats a circle, a circle is drawn at the end of the tail and makes the snake longer!

However, when I move the snake, the whole tail moves along with it, instead of travelling in the previous direction until it hit the spot in which the direction was changed.

I'll try to fix this problem on the weekend and once I bypass this obstacle, my Snake Game is complete and perfected!

That's all for today.

Wednesday 29 December, 2010

I am shocked...

Today, I stepped on the weight for the first time during the Christmas Break and found out that I had lost 5 pounds!!! My body weight dropped from 120 pounds to 115 in one and a half weeks!

Anyways, today, I spent a half hour attempting to increase the complexity of my Snake Game by adding the notorious tail. I used for loops and counters, employing a method similar to how I added the red circles to the game, however, the tail is encountering numerous errors...

1. Each time the snake eats a circle, the tail is incremented by one. Where the new snake tail is drawn depends on which direction the snake is moving in, so here I need a case statement. I used an array to keep track of the x and y coordinates of all the snake tails (maximum of 60) which could be in play. One for loop controls how many tail circles I want to draw by using a counter, which is incremented by one each time the snake eats a circle (for snakeIndex : 1 .. tailLength) however, here it gets confusing...

The snake cannot hit its own tail, or the game is over. This problem can easily be fixed because it is like hitting a red circle and can be controlled with a for loop. I did not reach this problem yet because I cannot even get the snake tail to be drawn yet! Each time the snake eats a circle, the new coordinates are based on the snake coordinates in front of it, but by subracting one from the array index, when the snake first eats a circle with the index set at 1, the array subscript is out of range. I`m very grumpy right now, so I think that I`ll work on that problem when I finish swimming.

Another problem is that when the user moves the snake, the rest of the body changes direction immediately instead of travelling to the coordinates in which the direction was changed. I know this problem will occur because I encountered it when I tried to incorporate a snake tail to my game at the beginning (apprx. Dec. 10th).

With so many problems and complexities, I`m not sure if I`m going to add a tail after all.

If the culminating activity for ICS involves creating a game, then I am going to work on making a tail. If the culminating activity is not what I think (most likely), then I would have saved some time, work, and frustration...

Tomorrow (and New Year`s Day) I`m going to Blue Mountain again, so I won`t get anything accomplished tomorrow (or Saturday)

That`s all for today...

Tuesday 28 December, 2010

sorry...
haven't been on lately...

The past 3 days have been a blast (too quick though...) and now there's only 5 days left until school starts!

On Saturday, I went to Blue Mountain, received my Season Pass (which includes a free Tremblant pass!).

On Sunday and Monday, my family and I went to friends' houses for dinner and I had lots of fun on both nights.

For the past week or so, I have been going to bed at 12 and waking up at 11 am which totally sucks because it messes my whole system up (breakfast at 11, lunch at 2, and dinner at 5)...

Anyways, I haven't accomplished anything big yet this holiday, but for the remaining 5 days, I'm going to review all of my ICS glossary terms including HTML and basic computer terms.

I also hope to spend more time on the piano and take advantage of the holidays to practise my pieces which are extremely difficult. As I am typing, my hands are still on fire from playing Fantasie-Impromptu really fast (faster than suggested speed of half-note = 88)...

That's it for today.

Friday 24 December, 2010

Christmas Eve is up in 8 hours....

I'm posting at 10 (am) right now because I am about to embark on a day-long journey full of activities... I have a doctor's appointment, then the Christmas Eve Church Concert, then dinner with friends, and I won't get much of a chance to accomplish anything today...

Tomorrow won't get any better though, because my family and I are going to Blue Mountain again and that'll take up the whole day and night...

Anyways, that's all...

Thursday 23 December, 2010

Tomorrow's the big concert...

and I haven't practised at all this week!

Today, I continued to modify my Snake Game "Prototype" (s) and now, at 360 lines, the game also incorporates red circles which make the game harder.

If the character (snake that is only comprised of one circle and never grows longer...) touches any of the red circles in play, the game is OVER!!! I accomplished this in 30 minutes by using boolean variables, 4 for statements (two for x and y axis, two to initialize) and an index to count...

In 30 minutes, I'm a' biking to the swimming pool. Sucks that Torontonians have to pay to go rec swimming, skating, etc (shows how wise it is for the G20 Summit to take place in Toronto...).

That's all for today...

Wednesday 22 December, 2010

wow...

Today was a rip-off day and a day full of wasted time...

I thought that I woke up at 8 o'clock and decided to doze off for another 5 minutes then...BANG!!! I wake up and it's 10:30!!!

No one's at home, except for my little brother, who's playing some RPG game, and me, being extremely stupid, decided to help him beat the game...

I ate breakfast at 11 and went to play piano for a full hour before lunch came at 12! I rode my bike (yes, in the cold and snow!) to the recreational centre for rec swimming (like Monday), only today, there was only lane swimming for old people! So, I went back home and at 3 o'clock, I had accomplished nothing!

Anyways, at 5 o'clock, I went back to the computer and spent only half and hour polishing my snake game by eliminating two excess and useless loops which made the program more confusing and inserting helpful comments all over the code. I cut out approximately 100 lines of code, just by eliminating useless loops. Previously, without those loops, my game would explode so I kept the loops at where they were, but then I made 6 Prototypes (yes, I wasn't crazy and there was a reason for six of them...) and finally solved the problem of eliminating the 2 loops without encountering problems...

I also took out 4 boolean variables (directionUp, directionDown, directionLeft, directionRight) which controlled the direction of the snake and replaced them with a single string variable (direction). With direction, I was able to use case instead of lots of ifs and elsifs because you couldn't use cases for chars (KEY_UP_ARROW) and long if ladders were the only solution.

Currently in my Snake Game directory, I have only 2 Prototypes; one which does not draw tails and is only 269 lines long (the Prototype in which I edited today...) and the other which does draw tails (which is 120 lines longer). The Prototype that draws tails does not function properly yet, so tomorrow, I'll work on that...

Tuesday 21 December, 2010

I can sense how close we are from Christmas with all the cheerful Christmas songs being played on 96.3 Classical FM and the classical Christmas movies (Home Alone II is right in there!) being showed on television.

Today, I went shopping (with my mom; a bit weird...) and I bought new black socks, leather shoes, and black pants and top for the upcoming Christmas Concert at TCCC (Toronto Chinese Community Church) on Christmas Eve. In the meantime, I'll have to continue to practise my clarinet solos (around 4 solos throughout the concert, which is quite a lot!)...

I didn't really work on any ICS homework or games today mainly because I woke up at 11 o'clock (really late), played 3 hours of piano (I was obsessed with Chopin's Revolutionary Etude, Polonaise in A Flat Major, and Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini 18th Variation) practising wonderful pieces which require virtuoso skill (which I am still lacking...), and went shopping (like I mentioned before) for 3 hours!

Tomorrow, I'll spend roughly 2 hours on ICS games and review, 30 minutes on reviewing english, a full hour of practising my clarinet solo, another 2 hours of piano, and one full hour of conditioning and strengthening my body (for Phys. Ed).

Today I did a hundred sit-ups and pushups (not in a row of course!) and I'll get stronger as each day passes...

Monday 20 December, 2010

First day into my break (actually, it's the third, but the weekend does not count...)!
For the next two weeks, my posts will be really short because they aren't necessary...

Today, I've been working on a "Guitar Hero" game and after wasting two hours of my morning, I have come up with a program which waits for the user to press a key and pending on the key pressed, the program will play a music file saved as .mp3 in which I transferred from my MP3 and IPOD. Currently, I have 9 awesome songs that will be played in the background.

As for the game, well let's just say that I have made fairly good progress. In just ten minutes, I made the general layout of the game, including the stationary circles at the bottom, the score and streaks, and drawing the circles and making them move them and disappear when the user presses a button. For the next hour, I wasted my time trying to make multiple circles come out and fixing other technical difficulties, such as drawing the circles before the key is pressed instead of waiting until the key is pressed and drawing the next circle.

I think that that's all the time that I'll spend on ICS for today...

I still have 2 hours of piano (Chopin Revolutionary Etude), 2 hours of recreational swimming, 2 hours of drawing, and a lot of other activities which consume 2 hours...

That's all for today!

Friday 17 December, 2010

Hooray!!!

Today was the last day of school and Chirstmas Break has begun!

I participated in the Christmas Concert and thus did not go to any of my classes today...

I hope that everyone has a happy and relaxed break because it'll be a long time before the next break comes (with exams in the middle of course!)

That's it for 2010 folks!!! (I might post during the holidays too, just to update the features of my game...maybe...) :)

Thursday 16 December, 2010

With the Christmas Break lingering just around the corner, certain teachers (don't worry, only my English Teacher...) have increased the homework load in an attempt to finish off the term with a final assignment and thus today, I find myself desperately finishing (or starting, as a matter of fact!) my Media Literacy Assignment, which is to analyze two advertisements.

Sounds easy? Well, it actually is easy, but because I'm an overachiever, I'm going to analyze three advertisements, each found in three different forms of media (magazines, Internet, and television). I have already found these ads (television ad featuring Dwyane Wade and Michael Jordan selling basketball shoes, a magazine ad by WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) which demotes golf-courses and raises awareness on the losses of habitation, especially trees, and an Internet ad which demotes smoking and raises awareness on the consequences of smoking).  Currently, I have four hours to complete this assignment, as well as practise my clarinet solo and write out Christmas Cards for my teachers...

Luckily, I have no ICS Homework. The task of circling the screen with specific colours was pretty simple and currently, I have finished all the advanced techniques assignments.

So for the rest of tonight, I will be feverishly progressing against my English Assignment and by the end of the Christmas, I'll have refined my "Snake Game" and have it ready in case the Culminating Activity requires us to create and complete a Turing game...

That's all for today...

btw (By the way, if you didn't know that btw meant By-the-way!)
Tomorrow will be the last post of 2010!

Wednesday 15 December, 2010

I think that I got busted today...

Today in class, I was editing my "Snake Game" because I had finished creating the "Bouncing Character" Assignment and I had nothing else to do. Sadly, Mr. Arkin saw me testing out my new features (installing a continuously-growing tail to the snake) and suspected that I was playing someone else's "game." As you know, I have spent nearly 5 hours working on my "Snake Game" and did not copy it from any website so the game was completely programmed by your's truly. I think that I'll take this as a sign to stop working on my Snake Game in class and save it for the holidays...

Anyways, we were assigned a new task to complete for tonight; moving the character around the 4 corners of the screen. I already accomplished that so now I need to make the laps around the screen diminish with each new lap...

That should take around 30 minutes to complete...and I'll use the remainder of tonight (3 hours) to catch up on piano, practice my clarinet solo, and start on my English Media Assignment which was assigned yesterday and is due on Friday!

That's all for today (pretty short, huh?)!

Tuesday 14 December, 2010

Yay!
It's my 64th post (although I'm not sure why this is important...)!

Anyways, today everyone received their ICS Programming Test #2 back and I have to say that I am shocked! I'm happy with my mark, but I'm confused about how I received them.

I knew that I would lose marks on Question 6 because I used the name "length" for one of my variable identifiers, yet I only lost half a mark for using var in my parameters. Honestly, I thought that I would lose more marks on Question 6 and ace everything else, but it turns out that I messed Question 1 up really badly! I only received 0.5 marks for my efforts even though I mentioned seperating words by underscores and all the details, but now that I think about it, I missed the whole point of the Question.

Question #1 asked for the rules, not good programming etiquette. I provided the latter, resulting in the mediocre mark. The model answer consisted of mentioning that the identifier can be of any length, must start with a letter, and can be composed of any characters. That would have received more marks and I know that I goofed that part up on way to a score of 21!

A 21/24 wasn't what I expected (I thought that I would score a 20!), but I can't really argue with this mark probably because I know that I received more than what I think I deserved... Percentage-wise, an 87.5 is average and brings my whole ICS Mark down to an 89.75, a few marks away from a 90. Now, I'll work harder to raise my average up...

A good start would be polishing my Snake Game, which I have not worked on since yesterday. With the introduction to more advanced programming techniques, I can show everyone what I am capable of, mainly the game/s that I created, although they're not that great compared to David, Felix, and Zelin's games.

Today, we had to write a program which "bounced" a character around the screen. I had planned my time to finish this assignment in 30 minutes, and I did just that, although this post is taking another 10 minutes and hindering my time saved for polishing my essay. I used multiple boolean variables and many if and loop bodies so that in the end, I was very confused by the ...

                                         end loop

                                end if

                    end loop

etc...

At first, when I ran the program, the characters kept on disappearing as the character was bouncing back towards the start. Then, my desk-checking (20 seconds of it!) revealed that after I put the character, the cursor would have been moved to the next line, and thus I added a ".." to four sections of my code in which each section controls either the up or down movement from either the first or last columns. Now, the program works perfectly and I'm going to print it out and finish editing my essay before 12 am and turn-it-in to TURNITIN.COM and go to bed early for swimming tomorrow and prepare my clarinet solo for the Christmas Assembly and...(GASP, GASP, PANT, PANT...)

That's all for today!

Monday 12 December, 2010

This is a double post...
YAY!!!
I am only posting to alert all of my blog followers (none, except for Mr. Arkin...) that I have succeeded in making the "snake" in my game move without having the user press down keys. Instead, the keys are used to change the direction. Of course, I used boolean values; without them, this wouldn`t be possible! Anyways, it only took one successful try and now, I am very happy!!!

Monday 12 December, 2010

I apologize for not posting on Friday 10 December because on that day, I missed the second half of school and did not attend ICS Class.

Today, we had the much anticipated Programming Test #2. Sadly, I really messed up my test. I could have scored perfect because the test was simple, but for the final part of the test, we had to write functions and call them into action. Sadly, I fell for the trick and declared a variable called length. Identifiers cannot have the same name as keywords, and that's where I messed up on. If the program was executed, then there would be errors, because I named one of my variables the same name as a built-in function. Besides that mistake, the rest of the test was straightforward and I'm confident that I didn't lose any marks anywhere else. The mistake that I made costed me at least 2 marks and at most 6 marks, so my grade ranges from 75%-91%. I am very angry at myself for not taking this opportunity to boost my mark and now I'll have to work harder to bring my mark up.

Luckily, I have a head start into the final leg of the ICS race. That is, I know how to make a flash game (well, not really). Anyways, like I mentioned before, I created a program which features the user attempting to control the movement of a square and make it to the end of each level. The game works perfectly now, although I'm not sure how I'll reduce the code line because each level is completely different and requires a completely different set of code (currently, my program is 1000+ lines for 3 levels). Therefore, I am going to stop working on this game and focus on another game that I have started to program.

My other game features the user, a circle, attempting to "eat" circles that randomly appear on the screen. Each time a circle is "eaten", another circle is added to the tail of the circle that the user controls (like the snakes game). If the user touches its own tail, a red circle, or the edges of the screen, then the game is over. The circles that appear feature random colours, with less frequent colours worth more points. This game is very difficult to make, due to the complexity required to control the movement of the circles which trail the main circle. When the user changes directions, the whole tail changes directions too and is consistently following the main circle. Also, if the user hits its own tail, then the game is also over. Determining the hit is easy, but because the number of circles in its tail increases, you would have to create an array of n value where n would equal the maximum number of circles the tail can be comprised of and ...

It's all very confusing, and I'm not sure if I'll successfully complete this game, but that's what the Christmas Break is for, right?

Anyways, I better hurry and finish polishing my essay, which is due at midnight, tomorrow.

That's all for today (YAY!!! NO ICS HOMEWORK!!!)!

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Thursday 9 December, 2010

One more day...

Tomorrow's my exam and I hope that I'll have an easy exam because I have studied really hard over the last 3 months. With an easy exam (e.g. August 2010), I can score as low as 95, but with a hard exam (e.g. May 2010), I can score as high as an 85, so the range of scores is vast. I know all of my terms with extreme confidence, but the only part that worries me is the essay component, worth 20 marks. Depending on the topics, I can score anyway between 10-20, so for the remainder of tonight, I'll spend my time studying (once again!).

Today in ICS, we worked in peer tutoring groups. I worked with Kevin and Bonnie (the three of us went to the swim meet yesterday) and spent the whole class trying to help Bonnie understand procedures and functions and helped Kevin with his code a bit.

I'll keep today's post really short, because I still have a lot of reviewing to do...

That's all for today...:(

On the contrary, after tomorrow has passed, I still have AN ENGLISH ESSAY AND PROGRAMMING TEST!!! YAY!!!

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

Wednesday 8 December, 2010

ahh...

Polonaise in A Flat Major (Heroic) op. 53 by Frederich Chopin sounds amazing...

Currently, I am listening to musical excerpts from specific pieces in which I have to study for my music exam. Listening to Classical and Romantic music is an extraordinary blessing that should not be abused by listening to Hip Hop, Rap, etc, consistently. Sadly, I do not have the guts to create a playlist from Youtube featuring the all-time favourites from the Classical and Romantic eras because I would be severely critisized by my friends and that I do not work as efficiently when music is played, so I avoid Studio 218 as much as possible!

Anyways, today I stayed at school until 12 o'clock, when I had to leave for York Mills C.I. for a swim meet. I raced in 100m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, and 200m freestyle relay. Surprisingly, I came third in my heat for every event, which isn't too bad considering that everyone I faced was a Grade 10 and that I always lost to the first place finisher by 2 or less secondss. For the relay, I swam as anchor (oh dear, probably because I was the fastest swimmer in my relay team) and gave up a half-body lead over the York Mills swimmer and finished at the exact same time (he was a 10th Grader)...

I missed today's ICS class, but I had my friend Yaasir fill me in on what we learned today. Based on his information, today in class, everyone learned about procedures. I spent an hour at home today to tutor myself and catch up (consequence of joining sport teams...). I declared many simple functions and procedures that ran simple tasks just to orient myself with the new terms and their capabilities and how they operate. I made a new Turing File called "Functions and Procedures.t" and included (yes, I know how to use the keyword include) the file in my Substrings Assignment Question 9 and finished the required homework of creating the nextConsonant function.

Now that I have caught up, it's time for me to continue studying for my exam by listening to Debussy's L'apres-midi d'un faune (which I was listening to while I was posting).

It is such a beautiful and dreamy piece of music, but then again, what would you expect from Debussy?

Anyways, that's all for today!

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Tuesday 7 December, 2010

just 3 more days...(sigh)

until my EXAM!!!

For the past two days, I have been vigorously studying for my music exam (outside of school). I have written 3 essays (3 pages each!) in preparation, although the exam can be completely different from what I expect. On the previous mock exams, my score ranged from 75-98, showing the range of difficulty between eaach season and year. The previous exam was easy (I scored 98), so I'm guessing that the December History III Exam will be hard...

Anyways, these last couple of days have been stressful (understatement)...

I've had to squeeze an extra hour into my already busy schedule to study for my exam. To make matters worse, today I had a chess game at Cardinal Newman H.S. (YIPPEE!!! WE WON 4-1) and tomorrow I have a swim meet at York Mills. My schedule cannot go any lighter, and to make matters worse, I have a surprise Substrings Assignment Test coming up (I have a hunch), an actual Programming Test coming up this week (do not know the date), an English Essay due at the end of the week (my essay stinks right now...), AND MY 3 HOUR MUSIC EXAM ON FRIDAY!!! Saturday features dual two hour classes of art and Chinese and another two hours to play piano and catch up on this week (I haven't played a single note yet...can't wait to get started on Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata which is 20 pages long...). On Sunday, I have a 3 HOUR ORCHESTRA PRACTICE AT THE CHINESE COMMUNITY CHURCH because our Chirstmas Eve performance is coming up soon...

If I can just survive this week, then I'll be happily celebrating my survival during the Christmas Break...uh-oh...

The CULMINATING ACTIVITIES AND FINAL EXAMS!!! :(

If you're still reading, u must be laughing ur socks off at my misery...

Anyways...

For today, we have to modify Questions 10-24 and include our own declared functions...
About an hour later, I'll post again and describe my progress...

Until then, goodbye...

Monday, December 6, 2010

Monday 6 December, 2010

almost there...

JUST 4 MORE DAYS TILL MY MUSIC EXAM (gasp!)...

...and thus today, I took advantage of the half-day and studied for 3 hours!!!

Anyways...

Today, I had a swim meet in school and thus I missed the whole morning except fifteen minutes of ICS...
I competed in 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke (obviously lost in both races), but my times weren't that bad...(1:44 for breaststroke and 1:30 for freestyle). Anyways, the meet was fun (even though our medley team lost to the girls...pretty sad).

In ICS, Mr. Arkin returned. Yay!!! He taught the rest of the class how to use for and decreasing, two new keywords, for our Substrings Assignments. I already learned about for and when I got home today, I substitued the first Substring Question with for and understood how to use it. Decreasing is used to display the range of for in a descending order, so decreasing was useful for Substrings Assignment Question 2. I modified Question 9 to include all consonants in just two minutes! Basically, I grouped all the similar consonants together (in other words, all the consonants that are preceded by consonants, all the consonants that are preceded by vowels, and the letter "z", which is special). I ended up using case (like before) with 3 labels. I'm not sure if there's an easier way to do so, but I think that the efficiency of my method will suffice...

Right now, my head is killing me!!! All the studying that I spent today on Carmen, Symphony No. 5 in C Minor op. 67, and Messiah has had an ill effect on my brain. Like Mr. Arkin said, I'm cramming everything into my head, although with History 3, it's impossible to be fully prepared because the exam will be on anything in a 500 page textbook!!!

On top of that, I have a possible ICS Quiz and Test this week and I'm not sure of the date, although I'm pretty sure that we'll have it tomorrow...

Oh yeah...

Today, after we were dismissed from school, me, along with 2 other friends, went back to our old school to say hello to our teachers. In fact, we bought them doughnuts too!!! We spent about an hour at our old school and thus I got home at 2:20 feeling very sick and under the weather!!!

Right now, I still have another essay to write for English! Luckily, it only has to be 750 words long and I already completed the introduction :)

Lots of work to finish, lots of things to study, lots of tests coming up, lots of sleep that'll be needed tonight, and lots of luck that I can continue like this for 4 MORE YEARS!!!(YEAH BABY!!!):)

That's all for today...

Friday, December 3, 2010

Friday 3 December, 2010

YIPPPPPEEEE!!!

Today, I finally finished all the Substrings Assignment Questions! I continued to help a few peers with their works (yes Andre, you know what I'm talking about). I took some time to understand the purpose of Questions 19-24 and figured out in less than 30 seconds of the top of my head how to complete the remaining 6 Questions! To centre the word, use (maxcol - length (word)) div 2 to determine the number of spaces on both sides of the centred words. So for now, I have no ICS Homework, except to study for the upcoming two tests...

Sadly, I won't be at school on Monday due to a SWIM MEET!!! It will be the first one this year, and members will be competing against other Victoria Park C.I. students in various events. I am going to compete in the Jr. Men's 100m freestyle and breaststroke... I'm not the fastest swimmer there (by far!) but I was actually one of the few Grade Nine Students besides Kevin, Ronny, Vlad, and Praveen who stuck with Swimming as everyone else had quit!

That's all for today (sadly, my posts are becoming shorter and shorter due to the decreased homework load)!

Thursday, December 2, 2010

Thursday 2 December, 2010

Hurray!!!

I spent the majority of today's class helping Kevin fix his game and some peers with some Substrings Assignment Questions. I explained to them how to use the ord and chr functions for certain Substrings Assignment Questions (specifically the ones that involve returning upper and lower cases). Therefore, I only had ten minutes to work on Substrings Assignment Questions and thus I had to complete most of it at home...however, at this time (9: 52), I have finished the first 17 Questions, surpassing the minimum of 15 Questions set by Mr. Arkin. I quickly glanced at the remaining Questions, however, they do not seem to be related to Substrings and other students have posted on Wikispaces regarding the actual purpose of those Questions, so for now, I'll just go to sleep, hope that I'll do well on tomorrow's Quiz, and...yeah!

That's all for today (there really wasn't anything special about today and thus today's post is a lot shorter than the previous ones...)!

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

Wednesday 1 December, 2010

YAY!!! IT'S THE FIRST DAY OF DECEMBER!!!

There's only 10 days left until my History Exam (YIKES!!!), 17 days left until school is out (AWESOME!!!), 24 days left until Christmas (EVEN MORE AWESOME!!!), 26 days left until the best day of this year, 30 more days until the end of 2010 (approaching 2012...), and 2 months left until the dreaded final exam (SUPER-YIKES!!!)...

Just to sum it all up, the next 2 months are going to be filled with action like a roller-coaster ride (Kingda Ka specifically!!!). Until then, I'll have to study hard...

Today's post will be extremely short, because a) I missed today`s morning class except for five minutes of silent reading because I was involved in the Victoria Park pep rally!!! For the whole first period, I, along with other athletes from fall sports-teams, engaged in cheering and raising the spirits of every student in the school, grade by grade and thus we had to perform (more or less improvise...) three times for different audiences.

b) After school, I had a chess match at Don Mills C.I. The chess team had to bus all the way to DMCI!!! By the time we got there and actually began our matches, it was 4:20!!! Players were allotted 45 minutes each and thus the maximum time limit of one match is 90 minutes. My match was long and tense, with the final time on each player`s clock at 3 minutes!!! In the end however, I won the match and our team defeated Don Mills 4-1 (GO VP!!!)

After the chess match (5:30), I had to bus home!!! It took another hour to get home and after dinner and an hour`s practice of piano, it was 8:30. I had no time to work on my game today, nor the Substrings Assignments, however, currently, I have finished the first 11 Assignments. With a full period tomorrow, I`ll expect myself to complete Substrings Assignments 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16, thus surpassing the bar that Mr. Arkin had set for us, although I`ll finish all the Substrings Assignments if I have time.

On Friday, we will be tested on Substrings, so until then, I`ll continue studying for the upcoming Substrings Quiz and the Programming Test next week!

That`s all for today (it turned out that this post is no shorter than any other!!!)...

Tuesday 29 November, 2010

SO CLOSE!!!

The first level of my game is almost completely full-proof!!! I spent another hour working on my game, adding the introduction and experimenting with arrays replacing the numerous variables found in my program. From this I learned two very interesting things...

First off, a big flaw in level one is that the user can avoid the circles simply by moving the square outside of the box and going around. Today, I modified the movement of the square in the Input.KeyDown so that the coordinates would only move if the coordinates were inside the box. The result was that the square would be stopped from exiting the box, however, if the user keeps the arrow key down, the square would force its way out of the box. Then, while I was experimenting with the arrays, I made the section of the code that controls the movement of the circles (up and down) comments and ran my program. To my complete astonishment, the square could not escape the box! The only flaw in this is that the circles weren't moving and when I uncommented the section of the code that controls the movement of the cirlces, the square can once again escape the box.

Another flaw that I haven't fixed yet is the situation involving the user hitting a circle and losing a life. I have an accumulator, which accumulates deaths and decrements the life counter, set at three, by one. Once the life counter reaches zero, then the screen is cleared and a big and fat game over sign appears on the screen. However, once the user loses a life, the level does not reset, instead, the square remains where it is, only with one less life. Therfore, one could simply rush through the level and kill two lives, yet still complete the level and have their lives reset for the next level.

Currently, I am restricting myself to working a single hour a day on my game so that I do not spend too much time on it and so that I don't get carried away with it.

Today in class, I completed Substrings Assignments 5, 6, and 7 with no problems. Tomorrow, I'll actually spend time working on the Substrings Assignment instead of modifying my game and helping other students understand the proper usage of arrays and Repetition Question 13! If I can go through tomorrow's period without any distractions, then all the Substrings Assignments will be finished, since Mr. Arkin mentioned that we do not need a documentation section in our Substrings Assignments.

That's all for today (once again!)!

Monday 29 November, 2010

SORRY!
Yesterday, before I could post, my dad forced me off the computer, because I had spent the whole night yesterday working on my "GAME!"

SO, for today, I'm posting right now about yesterday and later on in the day, I'll post about today!!!

Now then, the game I mentioned is a fairly simple game (it's flash too!). You might be familiar with an online flash game called "World's Hardest Game Ver. 1 and 2". Anyways, my game follows similar rules and objectives as the World's Hardest Game, in which the user, controlled by arrow keys, has to advance their token (a square) from one side of the screen to the other side. Sounds easy? Well, inbetween the screen are numerous blue circles which bounce up and down in a fixed position. If the square grazes a circle, then the user loses a life and has to start all over again. The circle moves at fast speeds, thus increasing the difficulty of the game. Currently, I have finished programming the code for one level, however, I still need to polish a few things, such as the screen-flickering (although I set the screen to graphics mode), the boundaries (so the user cannot "cheat" and avoid the squares by going outside the screen), and what happens when the user loses a life (instead of resetting the level, the user stays in the same position, only with one less life).

As you can see, my game still needs to be polished a LOT just so that the first level will function properly! I plan on finishing the first level before school is out, then working on new levels during the Christmas Break. Until then, I have to focus on my English Compare and Contrast Essay and my ICS Substrings Assignment and Programming Test.

Yesterday in class, I completed the first four Substrings Assignments with no difficulty whatsoever. After that, I continued to work on my game for the rest of the period. The Programming Test has been post-poned to next week (thank God!), however, I don`t really feel the need to panic about the Programming Test because up to this point, everything that we have learned has been really straight-forward (input, output, selection, and repetition). Just in case though, I`m going to review a little (around 15 minutes a day) for the remainder of this week to refresh and review everything, because I have a pretty good feeling that this Test will be a lot harder than the previous Test and that we will be given less time to complete the test (last time, we received almost two minutes for each mark), so maybe this time, the Test will be out of 50 and we will have 50 minutes to complete it, or...

...enough worrying. It does not matter what the test will be out of, because I know that if I`m prepared, then the Test will just be a big review of everything we have learned!

Until later on this day, that`s all for today!

Thursday 25 November, 2010

it's 10:30 right now, so I'll keep this post short (I have swimming tomorrow)...

Sorry for not posting yesterday, but I swear that I did post, but somehow, I must have forgotten too...

Anyways, I feel...overjoyous (did I use the right emotion?) right now! My arrays finally work with no errors! Previously, I had finished everything, except for the fact that when I wanted to exit the loop with a zero, I kept on receiving the error "Error! No value for expression!" I thought that this meant that I had a wrong boolean expression somewhere, but my dad pointed out to me that in an array, all the elements in the array must be assignmed a value, or the array won't work. So in the initialization section, I initialized every array element to a zero by using a loop, and as I gathered each price, I substituted the previous value (0) with the new value the user was providing. It turned out that there were no errors (thanks Dad!) and that I learned something very important. Though my dad helped me, I still learned how to properly use arrays from now on, as you learn the most from your mistakes and that it is better for someone to help guide you through your problems than to spend two hours on the computer and a piece of paper trying to solve the problem...

It's getting late, and my homework is complete, so I think I'll call it a day...

Tuesday 23 November, 2010

Almost there...

Just another fifteen hours and the first-term report cards are due up at the plate! Who's excited, and who's worried? All I know is that I am eagerly anticipating the results of my first-term report card and that I am hoping for the best (of course!). Of course, whatever I receive reflects the hard-work that I have placed in my assignments, so once again, I hope to receive top-notch grades in certain subjects...

Anyways, back to ICS now (notice how I always go off-track at the beginning of my posts like yesterday)...

I was slightly disappointed in my mark for the Printer Assignment, but I actually know that I deserved that mark because of some extreme sloppiness! When I copied the link to validated HTML and CSS, I left out the closign tag for <p> and thus when the CSS validation was clicked, there was an error, resulting in my one point lose in the Validation Section (what a stupid mistake!). If I had paid a little more attention to my work, I would have discovered the error and I could have received a 15/16 (94%) instead of a 14/16 (88%), however, that's life, and you cannot live it without being disappointed and regretting your actions...

Moving on now...

Today, we spent the entire class working on the computers and finishing the notorious Repetition Assignment #12. I completed the assignment in class (once again) although I'm not sure how to display the price with the Receipt, so I'll figure that out later...

That's all for today!

Monday 22 November, 2010

YIKES!!!
Yesterday, I stayed up until 1 0'clock working on my Printing Assignment. The many reasons I have for that is that first of all, I had way too many extra-curricular and outside of school activities over the long weekend. On Friday, I had a doctor's appointment and went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. In the evening, I had a 2 hour sketching class. I used up the remaining time that I had playing the piano and preparing for my final exam. Saturday, I had a dentist appointment (to clean my teeth) and a two hour chinese class after that. When I got home, it was 5 o'clock and I had to finish reading Shakespeare's play "As You Like It", which was assigned on Thursday and to be completed on Monday as well. In addition to 1 hour of piano, I had no free time on Saturday either to start my Assignment, so going into Sunday, I would have to complete a major Assignment in a short period of time...

Sunday was filled with more lesssons! A two hour theory class capped off the morning and by 1 o'clock, the only thing that I had accomplished was that I finished eating my lunch! Following my Theory, I spent another full hour by taking private clarinet classes, lasting from 1:30-2:30. Immediately following clarinet, I was driven to my Sunday Church Orchestra, which lasted for a couple of hours until 5:30. By the time I got home (after my little brother's 30 minute piano class), it was 6:30 and I still didn't start my Assignment yet! So from 7:30-12:30, I furiously worked on the Printer Assignment, and thus today, my sleep-deprived body did not accomplish anything...

In English, I dropped my nickel twenty times (lack of focus)! During ICS, I successfully completed Repetition Assignment Questions 9-11 modified and thus I have no homework for today, however I really need to rest my eyes, or else I might get glasses...

Thursday 18 November, 2010

Today was a pretty sick day...

In gym, we had an full-period of basketball tournaments with a supply teacher!!! In English, we had another supply teacher and many students squandered the period by texting, yelling "PENIS!" (very, very wrong...), and annoying the teacher...

Anyways, back to ICS now...

Today, we spent the majority of the class working on our Repetition Assignments. In a few minutes, I had modified Question 8 to count positive even integers and display messages accordingly tothe integer's value...
I also finished Question 10, however, I still need to finish Repetition Assignment Questions 11 and 12, which will take tomorrow to complete...

We were also assigned an HTML Assignment; to compare printers' prices and find the most suitable printer based on each student's preferences... The Assignment seems like it will take a long time to finish, and it's due on Monday, so I'll spend the long-weekend finishing it...

Besides that, I have nothing else for the weekend, except that tomorrow, I'm going to watch the premiere of Harry Potter with my friends at the very first time too!

That's it for today!

Tuesday, 16 November, 2010

oops...

that's all i can say...

Somehow, yesterday, I misread the student number, although I checked it twice, and to my dismay (which was expected), my average is actually a 92 and not a 98 (laugh here!)...Yesterday, I asked someone to check my mark at lunch because I had a club and I gave him my student number and he told me it was a 98 (?). Anyways, during Period B, I checked it myself and I was CERTAIN that 98 was adjacent to my student number (310-302-203), although I DEFINITELY misread that...

Anyways, enough with the marks. 92 is already high enough for me but I will continue to work hard to achieve an even higher score...

Today in class, Mr. Arkin collected our best Repetition Assignments as of yet. Sadly, I left Question 13 at home (thinking that we would not need it) and thus I could only hand in Question 4. I originally had docummentation templates in my Input and Selection Assignments, however, Mr. Arkin stated that we would not need documentation templates from now on during a Quiz, so I stopped using them. Now, I'll have to copy paste the template into each of my Repetition Assignment Questions (which will not take long). Questions 6 and 7 were assigned today, but I already completed them so all I have to do is print them out (along with Question 13). Mr. Arkin corrected my Repetition Question 4 by advising me to leave more blank spaces between major sections, adding more comments for loops and if ladders for an explanation, and cutting out some magic values...

I have revised all my Repetition Assignment Questions (that I have finished) and for tomorrow, I'll attempt to hand in Question 13, but I'll prepare Question 6 and 7 too...

That's all for today!

Monday 15 November, 2010

Whew...

I am EXTREMELY RELIEVED and SATISFIED with my ICS mid-term mark!!! Surprisingly, I earned a 98 (?) although I'm not sure where that came from exactly... I expected to get an 87 or 88 because that was my raw average (84 and 91) yet somehow I received 10% more...
When I saw my mark, I thought that maybe the mark was assigned to the wrong student number or it was a typo, however, after discussing with my friends, I realized that everyone (my friends to be exact) received a bump in their marks...but whatever the case, I'm definitely not going to argue my mark anyhow...

Today, I spent a whole hour completing and perfecting Repetition Assignment 13 so that there are no flaws and that the program is fool-proof no matter what the user inputs. I also completed Repetition Assignments 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 and for the rest of tonight (posting at 8 o'clock), I'm going to focus on my extra-curriculars (piano and drawing)...

Tomorrow's a late start day, so I won't come to school early again (like last time)...

Friday, 12 November, 2010

Today was yet another "relaxed" school day, which are hard and rare to come by so I'll enjoy it while it lasts...

Anyway, today, we started a new sub-unit, repetition. We learned about loops and their general structure, in which I have already learned previously and the importance of the placement of the exit when in a loop. Infinite loops do not have an exit when and thus the loop never ends. For homework, we have to program 4 codes (2 codes for the first 2 questions of Repetition and 2 codes for modified question 2 and modified class question).

I finished the first 2 Questions in Repetition, but now I have to make modified codes of Question 2 and a sample from class...

This weekend will not be as easy as today was, so luckily, I don't really have much homework from any of my classes...

Thursday, November 11, 2010

Thursday 11 November, 2010

On this gloomy Remembrance Day, I received the most satisfying (and second) ICS test score yet (an 88% or 22/24). I thought that I would do worse, but in the end, I did a lot better than I thought (I always get higher marks when I think that I did bad e.g. English Poetry Test). Talk about no self-confidence (self-confidence always kills my tests with careless mistakes)...

The ironic thing about Question 7 was that I thought of using an accumulator with 5 minutes left (not enough time to fix the error) and created my own code version of Question 7, which exactly matches with Mr. Arkin's example that was shown today!

Anyways, today, I have to get my test signed and that's about it. Now my ICS average is (I think) 81% (Superpower Autobiography was a 74%) so at least my grade is an A (-). My other subjects should bring my mark up (95% average in English and 90s in Phys. Ed and Music :). Anyways, all I have to say is...

YES I CAN!!!

Wednesday, 10 November, 2010

SHOOT!!!

Today, we had our first programming test and I DID NOT do well...

For Question 7, I used if and elsif instead of accumulators (which I figured to use after the test was over...) so for Question 7, my code is a full page long (sorry). So much for keeping it simple. A big mistake I made was putting greater than or equal to. I realized my mistake, but did not have enough time to finish it, as Mr Arkin said that we had to stop and hand the papers in...It does however execute properly, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal, but I'm definitely sure that I lost 2-3 marks there.

To fix Question 7 and make it more simple, I created this program which executes the same as Question 7, only it's much simpler and 0 is not counted as positive...

% declaration section
var integer1 : int
var integer2 : int
var integer3 : int
var sum : int
% initialization section
sum := 0
% input section
put "Three integers: " ..
get integer1, integer2, integer3
% processing section
if integer1 > 0 then
    sum := sum + integer1
end if
if integer2 > 0 then
    sum := sum + integer2
end if
if integer3 > 0 then
    sum := sum + integer3
end if
% output section
put "Sum: ", sum

For Question 3, I wasn't sure if both my answers were different (they were related in that the datatypes were incorrect, one in the code and one by the user of the program) so I might lose some marks there. That Question was out of 3, so I probably received 2 marks for my poor effort (ran out of time).

For Question 4, the standard "get" usage was get following a prompt and that sometimes, the ": *" option is used to accept all tokens. For the optional usage, the user is prompted to submit several data at the same time, each delimited by blank spaces. I'm pretty sure that the ": *" option is the optional usage of get, so I might have gotten that Question wrong and lose another mark...

I think the test was out of 20, so my prediction is that I scored a 15-16 ish on the test, which isn't going to help my subpar mark...

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Tuesday, 9 November, 2010

study, study, study...

Tomorrow, we have our first programming test, in which I hope to ace (not likely but still possible) to boost my mediocre mark substantially. I understand everything that we have learnt, but I'm pretty sure that there will be something on the test that I'll goof up on. The gap that seperates a perfect score from 99% is larger than the gap between 90% and 99% and I hope to fill those gaps in...

Anyways...
I finished the program at school in which counts the marks and finds the mean for each...
For the remainder of tonight, I will study hard (like yesterday) and hope to survive tomorrow's test...

Monday, November 8, 2010

Monday 8, November, 2010

Today was a rather easy day, excluding the swimming practice in the morning. I don't think that I'll return on Wednesday, as I am not a hard-core swimmer (just someone who is waiting to turn 16 to become a lifeguard)...

Back to ICS...

Today, we presented our posters. Mr. Arkin missed us by accident and thus we (Mounir, Ragulan, and I)presented last. Everyone before us had stated a lot of similar aspects and features of the program, but no one mentioned string delimiters and output field widths and a couple other little things...
After, I went outside with a couple of other students and we stuck the posters onto the wall. Now that I think about it, I should have made our poster neater and more attractive...

On Wednesday, we have our first programming test, which I think will be a piece of cake (hopefully) but you never know what could be tested, so I am still going to review my programming glossary for proper definitions of programming terms. I also need to continue to desk-check, because it will most likely be on both this test, and the final exam (I think).

Until Wednesday, I'll have to study very hard because I have a poetry reciting test (similar to speech arts) on that day as well...

Friday 5 November, 2010

Today, we learned the proper format for Canadian dates, so my posts will now include the Canadian format for dates instead of the American format...
Also, I have to update my notebook...
We'll probably have a notebook check on Monday, so I'm going to update my notebook and table of contents...
Today, we finished the Code Analysis. My group (mostly myself) found lots of features and stats for the code and filled the whole "poster" up with cursive. I also copied the poster into my notebook.
That's all for today...

oh yeah!!!
I'm posting at 5 now because my piano lessons were moved to once every two weeks, so Fridays are slightly more relaxing...

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Thursday November 4th, 2010

its getting cold outside, and I'm still wearing shorts...

Anyways, today we worked in groups of 4, however, my group consisted of only three students and thus it took a longer time to find all the features of the code. I had no problems tracing the execution of the code and desk-checking. Afterwards, we used markers to fill up our big sheet of paper. Of course, we did not finish, but we're close to doing so! For homework, we have to desk-check and trace the execution of our 3 most sophisticated codes, so I'm going to trace the execution of Input Assignment #4, Selection Assignment #8 and #12...

That's all for today!

Wednesday November 11th, 2010

Today was "Take your kids to work" day and thus I did not go to school today, however I am still posting my experience at my mom's work place...
I was originally going to go with my dad, however, he asked his boss and he said that "kids" were not allowed to enter their building because it was "dangerous (lamination and manufacturing chips)."

Anyways...
My mom is an engineer technician. Her job involves reviewing the designs of products (printed circuit boards, hence the company's name "Data Circuits") and making them more manufacturable. She decides the process flow and more than often edits the designs of the circuit boards at home...
Today, I sat in her office for about half an hour, watching her work. About five minutes in, I met her boss, a native of Chile. He entered my mom's office and asked a bunch of questions about me, even though he knew that I was coming today. He then placed a stack of paper on her desk and said that there was an error with the last product and that the client was not satisfied with the finished product. My mom explained that the people who handed her the designs of the product said to keep it at 2cm so she left it at 2cm. It turned out that the client had wanted the circuit board at 2cm but then changed it to 2mm. The blueprint and steps of the designs were not modified, so 2 cm were kept. My mom's boss realized that the other people were to blame and left, before shortly returning and placing another stack of papers on her desk and saying that this was their next product and that she better not make any mistakes with a wink.

Afterwards, my mom gave me a tour of the manufacturing "room". The atmosphere reeked and smelled like...chemicals (go figure). The room was as big as Victoria Park CI's double gym! Large tanks of steaming, dull-coloured liquids with corrosive and flammable signs on them surrounded us. I stared into one of the tanks. There were 4 dividers with each section of the tank a different coloured liquid. Machinery on top moved circuit boards that were dipped into one section into another. The sight of the liquid made me feel sick as the stench was undescribable. In a way, it didn't smell bad like someone's gas or garbage, but the smell, along with the reminding thought of corrosive and flammable chemicals made my head feel dizzy. In fact, after a couple of minutes inside, when I took a breath, I coughed and it did not feel like a normal cough either...

My mom showed me a couple more rooms in which the circuit boards were prepared to be dipped into the tanks and where they were compressed and finishing touches were made and then we exited the manufacturing side of the building. We returned to my mom's office, where she began to review the next product's design and I was bored, so I hopped onto the adjacent computer and began to play chess with the computer (on the chess team and I was sharpening my skills for tomorrow's meeting). I used the Sicillian Dragon and the Halloween Gambit, watched a few chess videos, listened to some rock and classical songs, and soon enough, the lunch break came. My mom's colleagues were celebrating Diwali and thus there was, in a sense, an all-you-can-eat-Indian-delicacies. At that time (12 o'clock), I wasn't hungry, so I thanked the people there, took nothing to eat, and took the TTC home. When I got home, it was 2 o'clock because my mom's work place was in Markham and thus it took a long time and an extra fare to get home.

Once I got home, I finished my ATM outline with my own modifications. Instead of adding a "label: " in case the menu_choice did not match any of the above labels, I added a loop at the beginnin, when I prompted the user for his/her menu choice so that if the choice was not between 1 and 6 inclusive, then the question would be looped and repeated until the boolean expression menu_choice >= 1 and menu_choice <= 6 was true.
I made similar adjustments with my other label numbers, though my biggest adjustment was placing the processing section outside the loops of each question so that the savings/chequing_balacne would not increase/decrease with each invalid withdrawal or transfer.

That's about it for today...
I'm pretty sure that that was my longest post, as it took 20 minutes to compose!!!

Tuesday November 11th, 2010

Today, I was so focused on getting to school before ICS started at 8:45 and not being late that I completely forgot that today was a late start day!!! I rode my bike to school (9k) at arrived at 8:30. There was no one else at the schoolyard and I realized that today was a late start day. Feeling like an idiot, I camped inside the hallway, studying for my English Test and completing the Metro Crossword and Sudoku (I had 90 minutes to do so).

Back to ICS now...
Today, we learnt about a new type of selection statement, case statements. I had previewed the Selection Assignments II before, so I knew about what we were talking about and discussing. There were a couple of new keywords (case, label, of) that were mentioned. We were also assigned the ATM "assignment" in which we have to program, using an ATM code outline, a functioning ATM (Automated Teller Machine). I completed the assignment in class, however, now I have to guard my code against negative withdrawals, which I have just finished working on.

Tomorrow is "Take your kids to work day" and thus I will not be going to school, which means no ICS or English homework for...TWO WHOLE DAYS!!!

Monday, November 1, 2010

Monday November 1st, 2010

Today, we didn't really do anything in class except go through the Selection Assignments. I had no problems with them, except that I printed question 8 twice instead of question 8 and question 9 when I was printing my codes...
I have finished the first five Repetition Assignments and tonight, I will review the Selection II under the programming program control...

Friday October 29th, 2010

(sigh)...Another Friday...
Once again, for the nth time, I've been posting at 10:00 because of my art classes...

Today in class, I modified my Selection Assignments to make them more professional and appropriate and when I went to print the Code, the printer was out of paper. I asked the supply teacher if I could go to the library to print the Code, because the previous night, my printer had run out of ink while I was printing my English Assignment (17 pages double-sided). At the library, all the computers were taken and the librarian (Ms. Waybrant) told me to go to the main office and restock on blank sheets of paper. I got a new package of paper, but when I returned and printed my 8 pages, I found that the printer had run out of ink! After my INTENSE journey, I still did not print my modified Selection Assignments yet!!! This weekend, my printer will be restocked with ink so I'll print it out at home...

Today, I partially "cleaned my website" as I did not have enough time to complete the refinement of every Web page because of my "journey"...
however...
The long English Assignment has officially ended (received full marks of course), meaning that I am now free to work on the Repetition Assignments!

I'll have plenty of time over the weekend, wait, NO!!!!!!
I have 4 more classes, 2 hours to review for an outside of school exam, a 1 hour conference meeting to discuss the details pertaining to the trip to China for my orchestra, and HALLOWEEN!!! of course, I won't go trick or treating (I'll just snag my brother's treats)...

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Thursday October 28th, 2010

YAY!!!
I got a level 4 on my quiz!!!
Since I have already finished all the Selection Assignments, I really don't have much homework for tonight...
I won't start the Repetition Assignments yet because I have a huge English Project due tomorrow and I am going to have to work 3-4 hours to finish it, so for today, I'm not going to work on anything really...

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Wednesday October 27th, 2010

shoot...
The Quiz was pretty simple, yet I think that I did not do as well as I could have done because of some small errors...
First off, I included the if, then, else, and end if in the output section and not the processing section, so I probably lost some marks there...

Secondly, I didn't really use emhasis colour because my pen was black and I had no markers. I wrote in cursive (whew) and I bolded keywords using my pencil, but my variables did not stand out (I should have just printed variables) and my comments were the same...

Thirdly, I was deciding on whether or not to use constants (e.g LATE_START_DAY := 10:00) but decided against it after I re-read the instructions, which stated to create a SIMPLE program...

Then again, it doesn't really matter what mark I got, because the whole purpose of the quiz was to see if I knew the concepts of selection and that's what matters the most...

SECOND DOUBLE POST AS OF YET...

okay, I am only posting right now because I have finished all my Selection Assignments...

Tuesday October 26th, 2010

Today was the last day for Cross Country and from now on, I'll never miss any more class time until the winter season starts...
I don't really have any catching up to do, as I have finished the first 11 selection assignments with no problems. I have started question 12 and 13 and they aren't that hard, so I might finish all the assignments by tonight...
Anyways, I have to review for tomorrow's POSSIBLE POP QUIZ, because Class C had a quiz today so I'm only guessing that we'll have one tomorrow.
Tomorrow, I have ICS first period and I'll have to make sure that I won't be late...

Monday October 25th, 2010

Today was pretty easy in terms of work. I have started the Selections Assignment and finished the first 5 questions, however, the next 8 are going to be challenging becuase they require a LOT of ifs and thens and elses and it's very confusing.

My first priority for tonight is to finish my English Homework, becuase I have already finished my ICS Homework for today (2 mini assignments and blog). If I have time, I'll desk check my work, but because I have the next day off, I can desk check my work tomorrow at the cross country meet (it's supposed to rain...)

That's all...

Friday October 22rd, 2010

Today was pretty hectic and easy at the same time. For lunch, my friends and I went to Pizza Pizza because this week only, you can get a medium pizza for 5 dollars. We got there at 11:50 and waited until 12:05 to order. I got my pizza at 12:20 and got back to school at 12:28 while eating it at the same time, so I still made it in time for ICS however, half my pizza is still in my locker and I'll have to eat it later...
Today, since I already finished my Input Assignments, I am currently working on the Selection Assignments and I have finished the first one. By the end of the weekend, I hope to finish most of the Selection Assignments...

Thursday October 21st, 2010

SORRY FOR BEING LATE TODAY MR. ARKIN!!! I SWEAR THAT IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!!!
okay, so I was a tad late for ICS today because the bus came earlier than usual and the next bus came 10 minutes after, so I was scheduled to be at school at 8:35, but ended up arriving at 8:45, which of course, is unacceptable...
Today, we went over the first four input assignments. I had no trouble with them at home, however, now I need to change question 3 because previously I had set 2010 as a declared constant, however, now I'll change it into a variable and prompt the user to provide the current year. Aside from that, I have no other problems...
That's all for today...

Wednesday October 20th, 2010

whew...
Today, I received my mark for my Superpower Autobiography, and to be honest, I wasn't satisfied with a 37/50. I found that I had lost 3 marks for incorrect use of headings, which I admit was my mistake, but I also lost 6 marks for the link section. I received no points for my links, though I included 7 external links in my autobiography. I confirmed my work with students who received marks for their links, and they are the same (e.g. <a href=" "> </a>), yet I did not receive any marks for it. I only had 1 true internal links on my page, so I definetely lost a mark there, but I think that I could get some more marks for embedded links, link text appropriate, and external links numerous. Regardless, I think that I did not do as well as I thought I could.

Anyways, I'll leave that for when Mr. Arkin individually checks mine again, so hoepfully, I might be able to bump my mediocre mark (which was the average) up a bit.

Moving on now...
As I stated in my previous post, I completed all the Turing Input Assignments.

For today, I'm going to study for a quiz in which I KNOW will occur in the following week...

Double Post

My first double post!!!
I am currently posting because I have just finished ALL the input assignments especially question 4, which now has NO PROBLEMS AT ALL AND IS DUMMY-PROOF NO MATTER WHAT YOU TYPE IN!!!

Tuesday October 19th, 2010

YES!!!
Today, for cross country, I came in 8th in our region and our grade 9 boys team came in 2nd in our region, meaning that next Tuesday, we're going to Etobicoke for the city championships and miss another day of school :(
Anyways, I've already finished questions 1-5 excluding question 4. For question 4, I've added a lot of variables so now, the program asks for a starting and ending month, day, and hour, however, I cannot get the arithmetic correct. The database for the variables are all integers, but when I subtract the start day from the end day and multipy that number by 24 (hours) so that I can add that number to the difference in hours that the user provides me to find the total hours it took to reach that many kilometres, the product of 24*the number of days does not appear. Furthermore, I cannot think of a way to express the difference between the number of months (some months have 31 days, 30, or 28) but I think that I'll cross the month part out so that my program will only ask for the difference in days and hours...
That's all for today...

Monday October 18th, 2010

YES...
Today, I finished questions 1, 2, 3, and 5 in 1 hour and they all work perfectly, however, I can't really get 4 to work, but I'll spend tonight attempting to fix it.
Every other assignment doesn't seem that difficult and I'll finish them by the end of tomorrow...
Oh yeah!
I also have to start my programming glossary
Cya :)

Friday October 15th, 2010

Once again, I am posting at 10 because I just arrived home at 9:30, which is why I hate Fridays because of my extracurriculars...
Today, my class (B), was pretty lucky as we didn't have enough time to cover "get" and thus we do not have to complete the input assignment for the weekend...but I'll do it anyways because it shouldn't be that difficult and I'll have the time to do it...
Over the weekend, I'm going to review the Operator, Programming Guidelines, and Documentation Template and take notes for all three, as well as complete 2 more immensely detailed sketches, begin my debate moderator script, edit summaries, and trace Egyptian hieroglyphics for English...
On top of all that, I'll have to finish my outside of school work (Chinese, Theory, and Orchestra)...
This weekend is going to be tiresome and overloaded with work, but hey, its IB...

Thursday October 14th, 2010

YAY!!!
I just managed to finish the asterisk assignment in 2 minutes and deleted the final blank row on the run window on my first try with ..!
I'm going to work on english now, and later, I will review the variables and input pages and take notes...
Because we need to use subject dividers, I'll have to create a NEW table of contents to fit everything and sort everything so that it's more organized.
Sadly, tomorrow's Friday...

Wednesday October 13th, 2010

Today has been EXTREMELY HECTIC!!!
I am posting at 9:21 and my eyes are drooping...
Today, I had a cross-country meet at Centennial Park, Etobicoke. We got on the bus at 5:20 and arrived at VP at 6:30. I arrived home at 7:00 and started my ICS work at 8 after dinner and a bath.
Currently, I have finished my homework, but I still need to review the Subprograms and that's about it...
However, I am extremely tired right now, so I'm not sure if I'll get it finished...

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Tuesday October 12th, 2010

whoops
I forgot to post on Friday because I got home really late after classes, but we partied the whole class so I guess that there's nothing that I could really have written about.
I've been writing in cursive for a long time and hopefully, I'm getting better at it...

Today, I'm going to start creating a Programming Glossary because Mr. Arkin has hinted that we will eventually create one...
and I'm going to finish the output assignment that we were assigned...

That's all for today!

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Thursday October 7th, 2010

okay...
not much work for tonight...
I just downloaded Turing onto my computer and it works...
Now I just need to write down the definitions of the new vocabulary  and continue to find pictures for my glossary...
That's it...
TOMORROW IT'S TIME TO PARTY BABY!!!

Wednesday October 6th, 2010

YAH!!!
did some more binary code stuff today...
It was really easy, but took time and killed my eyes...
here's a message to decode...

01011001 01000001 01001000 00100001 00100001 00100001 00100000 01001001 00100000 01100110 01101001 01101110 01101001 01110011 01101000 01100101 01100100 00100000 01101101 01111001 00100000 01100111 01101100 01101111 01110011 01110011 01100001 01110010 01101001 01100101 01110011 00100001 00100001 00100001

That's it for today...

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

wow...
Today , we learned the binary code, which I had already reviewed last year. The class was pretty easy because I already knew about what we were learning and I didn't need to panic...
Previously, I had posted my Basic Computer Glossary pictures on the web page and today, I learned that we were only supposed to <em>find</em> images. I finished my other glossary a few days ago, so today, i am just going to add my definitions in...

Monday, October 4, 2010

Monday October 4th, 2010

Once again, I've spent 2 hours on the computer again typing up my glossaries and finding images. Today, while I was validating my Basic Glossary, I received 125 errors!!!Yes, 125!!!however it took me less than 5 minutes to fix all of them. As i am typing, I have finished my homework for today, which also included searching up DVD and CRT...
By tomorrow night, hopefully all my glossaries should be completed...

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Thursday September 30th, 2010

Today, I was at cross-country, so I could not come to class. I was pretty sure that all my teachers knew this, but anyways, I still received a phone call regarding my abscence at school, which is peculiar considering I was not absent for period 1 and left after the cross country team was called down. Tomorrow, I'll consult the head office and claer the misunderstanding...

Anyways...

i'm still working on my glossary because I have to add 70 links!!!(35 external links and 35 internal links)...Almost all of my definitions are there, so I'll spend the rest of the night linking...

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Today focused on a lot of repetitive work...
For my glossary, I had to continuously type <dd> and <dt> and 1. <br/>2. <br/>...
However, now I just need to add my definitions in as I have already finished formatting my Web page...
Tonight, I will create internal links to references in my glossary, but I will not have that much time because I have to finish my News Report for English first though...

Monday, September 27, 2010

Monday September 27th, 2010

whoops...
I was working hard on my autobiography and forgot to post on Friday, but I don't think that that would really matter in a serious way...
Anyways, I have already finished my Glossary Page as I am typing this; I just have to add in the definitions.
I just downloaded Dropbox and should be finished for tonight :)

Thursday September 23rd, 2010

FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN!!!
My braces appointment finished at 12:30, so I was late for Computer Science today...
Today, I am going to put the finishing touches on my Webpages and tomorrow, I will get my friend to mark the page.
Hopefully everything goes well...

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Wednesday September 22nd, 2010

YEAH!!!
Tomorrow, I'm getting my braces removed, so I will miss the morning but I will still be able to come in the afternoon. My Webpage is FINALLY live with NO PROBLEMS with the links...I just have to add more internal and external links and some images too...I added the special character entities so there's no problems there. I cut out my images because I feel that they do not fit in and my background is composed of a lightning bolt striking with a black background surrounding it, so I am not sure if I need any images at all because it might ruin my Webpage and autobiography.
Thats all for today...

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Tuesday September 21st, 2010

We did not have computer studies today because of grade nine day, but I'll still post.
Today, I'm going to check all the writing and make sure all the files are validated.
Hopefully tomorrow, there should not be any problems and it (autobiography) can be marked...

Monday, September 20, 2010

Monday September 20th, 2010

Once again, I revalidated all my files, checked all the links, saved each appropriate file according to their name (e.g. index.html and .css) but when my webpage is live, i cant access my autobiography and my homepage does not have the css content.
im going to spend some time trying to fix this problem and I still have to add my internal links!, although I'm not sure where to add them though...
Thats all for today...

Saturday, September 18, 2010

Saturday September, 18th, 2010

Sorry that I couldn't post this yesterday, but I had classes all night through and I didn't have time to post on Friday...
Anyways,
There's not really anything new happening, except that I need to integrate my images and create my internal links...
I still have to put my webpage live though, i'll do that tomorrow, if i have time...

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Thursday September 16th, 2010

WHEW!!!
I edited my home page and read the entire article on touque.ca.
I had a lot of fun with my home page...
Thats all I got to say for today...
Over and out...

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Wednesday September 15th, 2010

Today, I validated my HTML and CSS.
My images are complete, as well as my autobiography.
I also added HTML and CSS validation proof at bottom of page.
I have 4 external links and now I need some internal links.
I'll finish that tomorrow, because I am very busy tonight...

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Tuesday, September 14th 2010

YAH!!!
I finally learned how to add images today!!!
I added 4 big images to my autobiography.
I did not like my old autobiography, so I made a new one today.
I have 4 external links, however now i need some internal links, which are pretty tricky...
I am still having a little bit of trouble with the CSS...

Monday, September 13, 2010

Monday September 13th 2010

Welcome back Mr Arkin!
I downloaded Filezilla last Thursday, but I wasn't sure of what to do after though...until now.
I successfully transfered several files back and forth on Filezilla.
I still have to add Blogger and Wikispace links to my webpage.
I typed up a long autobiography and now I will have to summarize my story...

Friday, September 10, 2010

Friday September 10th, 2010

Today went by pretty fast...
During the work period, I played around with the HTML and learned how to add a hyperlink into my autobiography.
I also played around with the CSS, deciding on the best color pair and fonts...
I'm going to start typing up my autobiography now that everything is in place, although I still have to learn how to add images...

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Thursday September 9th, 2010

We had a nice supply teacher for today...
Everybody who was unable to log onto their computer accounts can now log on thanx to Ms. W.
I played around with the html and css during the workperiod and I began to establish the storyline of my fictitious autobiography...
I hope to get more work done for tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Today was pretty...hectic.
I learned a LOT in such a short span of time.
Creating a webpage with the abilities to alter the font color and background is pretty sick too.
Thats all I got to say for today...

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Tuesday September 7th, 2010

Pretty neat class...
The teacher seems really nice and I hope that that does not change...
Doesn't really seem like there's any "geeks" which is good.
Previewed Super-Power assignment, reviewed class website with parents, and created a Wikispace account and a Blogger account, thus completing all the assigned homework for tonight.
This course seems pretty exciting with the creation of web pages coming up tomorrow...
Not sure what else to say really...
seems pretty awkward already...
Three words sums it up really: I Am Psyched (figuratively).
